Passive Commuting and Higher Sedentary Time Is Associated with Vitamin D Deficiency in Adult and OlderWomen: Results from Chilean National Health Survey 2016–2017
The aim was to investigate the associations between different physical activity (PA) patterns
and sedentary time (ST) with vitamin D deficiency (<12 ng/mL) in a large sample of Chilean women.
In this cross-sectional study, the final sample included 1245 adult and 686 older women. The PA
levels, mode of commuting, ST, and leisure-time PA were self-reported. Vitamin D deficiency was
defined as <12 ng/mL and insufficiency as <20 ng/mL. A higher ST was associated with vitamin D
deficiency (odds ratio (OR): 2.4, 95%: 1.6–4.3) in adults, and passive commuting was associated with
vitamin D deficiency in older (OR: 1.7, 95%: 1.1–2.7). Additionally, we found a joint association in the
high ST/passive commuting group in adults (OR: 2.8, 95%: 1.6–4.9) and older (OR: 2.8, 95%: 1.5–5.2)
with vitamin D deficiency, in respect to low ST/active commuting. The PA levels and leisure-time
PA were not associated with vitamin D deficiency. In conclusion, mode of commuting and ST seems
important variables related to vitamin D deficiency. Promoting a healthy lifestyle appears important
also for vitamin D levels in adult and older women. Further studies are needed to establish causality
of this association and the effect of vitamin D deficiency in different diseases in this population.P.S.-U. was supported by a grant from CONICYT/BECAS Chile/72180543. J.P.-D is part of University

CONVIS: A tool enabling uninterrupted operation during refurbishments of complex buildings
Clash Detection refers to the identification of geometrical overlaps within a Building Information Model (BIM). This paper seeks to extend the notion of overlapping to activities: Given a construction site within a building, we seek to find clashes between construction activities and occupant routines. Such a situation is often encountered in the context of refurbishments of complex buildings operating 24/7 (e.g. airports, train stations, hospitals, prisons). By finding the influence radii of adverse effects resulting from construction - i.e. dust, noise and vibrations, functions may be temporarily relocated in order to guarantee uninterrupted operation. Our tool CONVIS implements these simulation and scheduling aspects and seeks to provide a digital project plan for refurbishments in the said context

The Mediation Effect of Self-Report Physical Activity Patterns in the Relationship between Educational Level and Cognitive Impairment in Elderly: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Chilean Health National Survey 2016-2017
The aims of this cross-sectional study were (i) to determine the association of educational level attained with cognitive impairment and (ii) to investigate the mediating effect of different self-report physical activity (PA) patterns in a large sample of older Chileans. A sample of 1571 older adults from the National Chilean Survey (2016-2017) was included. The educational level attained, PA levels, mode of commuting, sedentary time, and leisure-time PA were self-reported through validated questionnaires. Cognitive impairment was determined by Mini-Mental State Examination (modified version). Association between educational level attained and cognitive impairment was examined using logistic regression models. Counterfactual mediation models were used to test the mediating effect of self-reported PA patterns. A lower educational level was consistently associated with higher odds of cognitive impairment (OR range 2.846 to 2.266, all p < 0.001), while leisure-time PA was the only PA pattern that partially mediated this association (proportion mediated 8.0%). In conclusion, leisure-time PA was the solely PA pattern that partially mediated the association between the educational level and cognitive impairment. The rest self-reported PA patterns did not modify this association.P.S.-U. was supported by a grant from ANID/BECAS Chile/72180543. Study protocol and rationale of the “Cogniaction project” a cross-sectional and randomized controlled trial about physical activity, brain health, cognition, and educational achievement in schoolchildren
Background: Education and health are crucial topics for public policies as both largely determine the future
wellbeing of the society. Currently, several studies recognize that physical activity (PA) benefits brain health
in children. However, most of these studies have not been carried out in developing countries or lack the
transference into the education field. The Cogni-Action Project is divided into two stages, a cross-sectional
study and a crossover-randomized trial. The aim of the first part is to establish the associations of PA,
sedentarism, and physical fitness with brain structure and function, cognitive performance and academic
achievement in Chilean schoolchildren (10–13 years-old). The aim of the second part is to determinate the
acute effects of three PA protocols on neuroelectric indices during a working memory and a reading task.
Methods: PA and sedentarism will be self-reported and objectively-assessed with accelerometers in a representative
subsample, whilst physical fitness will be evaluated through the ALPHA fitness test battery. Brain structure and function
will be assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a randomized subsample. Cognitive performance will be
assessed through the NeuroCognitive Performance Test, and academic achievement by school grades. In the second part
32 adolescents (12–13 year-old) will be cross-over randomized to these condition (i) “Moderate-Intensity Continuous
Training” (MICT), (ii) “Cooperative High-Intensity Interval Training” (C-HIIT), and (iii) Sedentary condition. Neuroelectric
indices will be measures by electroencephalogram (EEG) and eye-tracking, working memory by n-back task and reading
comprehension by a reading task
Introduction: In Chile the first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed on March 3, 2020 and on the eighteenth of the same month the president decreed state of catastrophe, so that classes at school and university level went from the presence to the virtuality. The present study aims to know the level of satisfaction of the virtual classes of the students of Physical Education. Methodology: Quantitative, non experimental, transversal. The sample consisted of 542 students of Physical Education from different study houses in Chile. The Satisfaction scale online classes was adapted and validated. Results: there are significant differences comparing theoretical and practical subjects, with theoretical chairs being better valued. Differences were also found by sex, where males have a more negative perception about virtual classes and when comparing by course, freshmen have a more positive perception about virtual classes in relation to higher courses. Conclusions: there is a resistance on the part of students to virtual classes in Physical Education, because, although significant differences were found between the theoretical and practical subjects, values were always around 3 on a scale of 1 to 5. Future research with other variables such as physical activity, stress levels and strategies for the teaching of Virtual Physical Education are necessary.
Association of sedentary behavior with brain structure, cognition and academic performance in children with overweight/obesity: Activebrains project
Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health problems. In addition,
children are increasing time spent in low-energy activities, especially screen time.
Sedentary behaviors may increase the risk of developing overweight/obesity, and in turn,
both may have a negative influence on brain health. The structure of the brain is the result of
an interaction between environmental and genetic factors, which may influence cognition.
Childhood is a key life stage for development, and sedentary behaviors might negatively
affect brain structure and cognition. In this context, examining how the time spent in specific
sedentary behaviors may influence brain and cognition, specifically in overweight / obese
children, is of great relevance. Therefore, the objective of this doctoral thesis was to study the
association of time spent in different sedentary behaviors with brain structure and in turn with
intelligence (chapter I), executive functions (chapter II) and academic performance (chapter
III) in children with overweight/obesity.
The results showed that longer time spent in different sedentary behaviors was associated
with lower grey matter volume in specific regions of the brain, and in turn intelligence
(chapter I); watching television was the only sedentary behavior associated with executive
function, specifically with poorer planning ability and working memory and with better cognitive
flexibility (chapter II), and that none of the sedentary behaviors were associated with
academic performance (chapter III).
The results of the present doctoral thesis improve our understanding about the associations
of time in different sedentary behaviors such as watching television, playing video
games and total sedentary time with brain structure, cognition and academic performance in
overweight/obese children.Tesis Univ.
